'Sugar' Star Brings Some Spice to Celebrity Lineup

Much of the buzz this movie season is being centered around the breakout, Oscar-worthy performance of first time actor Algenis Perez Soto in the new baseball-themed movie Sugar. Hailing from the baseball hotbed of the Dominican Republic, Algenis was literally plucked from obscurity to play the lead role in the critically acclaimed film. Expect the buzz to increase still further as Soto is now joining a superstar lineup of Supreme Protein Bar celebrity endorsers that already includes NFL All-Pro running back Brian Westbrook, NL All-Star second baseman Dan Uggla and a host of other high-profile luminaries from the worlds of sport and film.

In his boyhood dreams of becoming a superstar, Algenis Perez Soto imagined himself on a ballfield, his baseball exploits beamed back to his native Dominican Republic on TV broadcasts of his Major League Baseball games.

Fame and fortune, however, can sometimes arrive via unexpected avenues. Soto has indeed made his mark with a baseball glove and bat. But his handsome visage and extraordinarily lean and muscular frame are appearing on movie screens across the land, not TV screens. And though he counts among his new teammates such sports stars as Dan Uggla and Brian Westbrook, he joins them as a celebrity spokesman for Supreme Protein, not as a ballplayer.

It’s quite a change of pace for the young man, going from aspiring ballplayer to established actor, but Soto has learned to make the most of every break that fate sends his way. Born and raised in the baseball-obsessed Dominican Republic, Soto has been playing baseball since he was only nine years old. Like practically every young Dominican boy, Algenis dreamt of one day being signed by a major league team and moving to the US. Instead, after an extensive casting search that spanned the United States and the Dominican Republic, Algenis was signed by the acclaimed US filmmaking team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck to star in “Sugar,” the story of young Dominican pitching prospect Miguel “Sugar” Santos and his journey through America’s minor leagues.

Even Soto’s new relationship with Supreme Protein, makers of the world’s only gourmet-quality, highly anabolic protein bar, began with an unexpected element of luck. To prepare for the role, the first time actor trained rigorously in the gym, building lean muscle and arm strength, while working with a pitching coach on his mechanics. “I had to really work hard with weights and flexibility on my shoulders and arms,” says Soto. “At the end of some days my arm was so sore I couldn't lift it.” To help build lean muscle mass, Soto began to supplement his nutritional regimen with Supreme Protein bars.

“The only supplements I took and still take are Supreme Protein bars. I always take them right after a workout to give my muscles the highest quality protein possible. I've never had a protein bar that tastes so good. They literally taste like a candy bar.” Soto’s enthusiasm for his new favorite anabolic taste treat soon came to the attention of executives at Supreme Protein and a new partnership was formed.

“Algenis is exactly the sort of highly motivated, goal-oriented achiever that personifies our brand,” says Supreme Protein Executive Vice President Kelly Conklin. “You look at all he’s achieved in such a short period of time, his physical transformation, his sheer athleticism and presence on a movie screen, and you can tell he’s going to earn continued success in whatever he puts his mind to. We’re delighted to have him on the Supreme Protein Bar team.”

The happiness is mutual. As is the case with many top athletes such as Brian Westbrook, Dan Uggla, and Tommy Hanson, Algenis says that there’s really no other protein bar that even competes with Supreme Protein. “I’ve tried many different types of protein bars and shakes, and Supreme Protein Bar is by far the best. Nothing satisfies my hunger and supports muscle growth quite like Supreme Protein.”

Since his new film's release in select cities in April, Algenis has received nothing but fantastic reviews from critics and audiences alike. Indeed, Roger Ebert says of Soto; "He embodies Sugar with a natural sincerity." That’s an unusual accolade for a young man who dreamed only of getting big hits and helping his team win a World Series. Now, however, it appears that Algenis Perez Soto’s next hit will be in Hollywood, not in the National League.
