In one year alone, nearly 23,000 visits to the ER were linked to the use of bath salts.
Santa Cruz, CA (PRWEB) September 24, 2013
Bath salts are a relatively new drug on the streets but already the effects of the abuse are being felt in communities across the nation. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) just announced the findings of their first national study tracking the use of bath salts and hospital emergency room visits. In one year alone, nearly 23,000 visits to the ER were linked to use of the drug. It is clear that the potential for harm is great. This report underscores the urgent need for education and awareness about the dangers of bath salts and other synthetic drugs. In an effort to meet this need Journeyworks Publishing has just produced an easy-to-read pamphlet called Bath Salts, Spice and Other Synthetic Drugs. Health educators and professionals can review this new title and a selection of additional drug abuse prevention titles by visiting Journeyworks Publishing’s Bath Salts and Other Drugs free review pack page.
What sends people under the influence of bath salts or synthetic marijuana (Spice) to the ER? Common reasons are severe anxiety and paranoia, a racing heart, feelings of extreme agitation or a loss of touch with reality. Kidney failure or heart attack can happen too. Sometimes the effects of these drugs take days to wear off.
The SAMHSA report states that about two-thirds of the ER visits involved the use of bath salts combined with other drugs. A statistic that serves to remind us that not only does the nation need to halt the spread of synthetic drugs like bath salts, but that there is a continued need to develop effective approaches to prevent substance abuse of all kinds. Health educators and drug abuse prevention professionals looking for materials to use in their prevention and awareness campaigns will find Journeyworks Publishing to be a great resource.
