The general public is invited to an open house to view the final selection of Battle Creek’s streetscape plan for the downtown. The open house will be held Thursday, March 11, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the Atrium of the McCamly Place, attached to the hotel at 50 Capital Avenue, SW.

The open house provides an opportunity to learn how citizen input guided economic developers and urban planners. The concept theme will be announced at the open house. During the event, several representatives will be available for questions and explanations of the plan. Refreshments also will be provided.

The final streetscape concept was made possible by several who openly shared their thoughts, experiences and hopes for the city. Using input, landscape architects matched ideas with requirements for streetscape longevity, compliance, cost, walkability, safety, sustainability, technology and entertainment.

In December 2009 and January 2010, a diverse group joined in forums and workshops led by Battle Creek Unlimited and Beta Design, a Michigan-based full service landscape architecture firm. The final streetscape plan reflects collaboration among workshop participants, including citizens, downtown employers, merchants, economic developers, governmental representatives, educators and non-profit organizations.

Following the open house, the streetscape display will be available for viewing at the Downtown Partnership and downloading on Battle Creek Unlimited’s website: http://www.bcunlimited.org/transformation.

The plan is being evaluated for cost estimating and preliminary construction logistics. All of the information generated will be reviewed by Battle Creek Unlimited and the City of Battle Creek for adherence to the design directions, as well as construction requirements.

The next phase of the design development will include the selection of materials and systems, utility coordination, further cost estimating and construction scheduling. The designers will submit images and data sheets for the project components for approval.
