New figures released by the US Department of Commerce reveal that tourist numbers have risen dramatically compared to 2009. The statistics, which were compiled over the first six months of this year show that 27.5 million international visitors travelled to the United States, resulting in an 11% increase compared to the same time last year. Despite 2010 being a tough year for the aviation industry, these results mark a new trend in travel, with the increase though to be due to the availability of cheap holidays to the USA.

Daniel Ox, Managing Director of online holiday experts Beat the Brochure says: “Over the past year, we’ve had more enquiries for holidays and cheap flights to the US, and the figures from the Department of Commerce also reveal that June this year marked the ninth consecutive month in a row that the number of passengers on flights to the US had increased. America has long been considered to be a highly desirable destination for many holidaymakers around the world because there are so many famous cities to choose from, such as Las Vegas holidays.”

June was also the month that 4.7 million international visitors arrived at various ports and airports across the country in that month alone. Visitation through the top 15 ports of entry accounted for 84% of all overseas arrivals, with the top three ports of JFK, Miami and Los Angeles accounting for 38% of all overseas arrivals. While the results from the top three mark a 1% decrease in arrivals compared to June 2009, 13 of the top 15 US ports reported increases in arrivals that month, with six of the 15 ports recording double digit increases.

Ox says: “The figures provided by the most popular US ports are very promising, as while a few of them have recorded a small decrease in visitor numbers, such as the statistics from the big three, the total result actually reverses a number of the declines recorded by these ports in 2009. JFK airport, which is most popular with foreign visitors who have booked New York holidays still accounts for a big proportion of visitors to the US, and remain one of our most popular holidays.”
