While typical items like computers, clothing, backpacks, shoes, calculators and notebooks might be topping back-to-school shopping lists, parents may want to want to re-prioritize that roster of must-haves. Rather, it’s the quality of sleep their children are getting the night before that needs the most consideration. To that end, the right kids bedroom set and world class mattress could be a students’ ticket straight to the honor roll. That’s because recently released studies are showing that it’s not the tangible products children bring with them into the classroom each school day that determine their academic success.
According to a recent investigation by The Parent Report, “An improvement in a child’s marks may be no further away than a good night’s sleep.” To back up that claim, the article cites a sleep specialist who asserts, “Sleep deprivation leads to a temporary loss in IQ levels, reasoning and memory, and even makes kids a little hyper.” These side effects have a direct bearing on lowered levels of learning, but the ramifications of lack of sleep don’t stop there.
“USA Today” recently ran an article titled “Sleep affects kids in school; how much do yours need?” Therein, it highlighted this fact, “At the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) annual meeting in June, dozens of studies were presented indicating school performance is dropping because of student sleepiness.” Cognitive ability, emotional health and physical well-being all suffer when kids come to class overtired.
If all that’s not bad enough research has indicated that insufficient sleep also doubles one’s chances of being obese and raises one’s risk for cancer, diabetes and heart disease. So just how much sleep do school-aged children need? The Pediatric Sleep Disorders Clinic at Johns Hopkins Children's Center recommends anywhere from 8.5 to 11 hours per night, with younger kids requiring more than teens.
Getting kids to log off their computers and put away their iPods, video games and cell phones in favor of an early bedtime can prove challenging for parents, but an inviting bedroom set and comfy mattress can help put an end to the nightly battle royale. Cool headboards, modern metal beds and contemporary kids’ bedroom sets all increase the allure of going to bed. And if they top that bedding off with a top-quality mattress like one from the Beautyrest World Class Mattress Collection, parents just might hold the golden key to their children’s academic achievement.
Home and Bedroom Furniture, an online retailer of quality metal beds, headboards and mattresses, recommends parents consider putting solid bedroom furniture at the top of their back-to-school shopping lists. “The right bedding and sleep foundation can really help ensure your kids get the good night’s rest they need to stay healthy and perform at their academic best,” explains company spokesperson Ben Weissman.
