American Writers & Artists Inc. (AWAI), has launched an online resource that offers a detailed breakdown of a little-known but very lucrative industry: copywriting.

Copywriting is simply persuasive writing intended to help sell products and services through direct mail, sales letters, sales emails, social media, brochures, billboards, TV commercials, online advertising, and many other marketing channels. It’s a $2.3 trillion industry annually.

Copywriting is always a growth opportunity because companies from large to small are constantly advertising and marketing, and they need a constant flow of fresh copy to stay relevant to consumers. Website copywriting is a huge portion of this opportunity, thanks to the growth of the Internet and ecommerce.

Anybody can become a copywriter. The most important parts of a copywriter’s job description are a desire to write, maintain a flexible schedule, and get paid well.

No formal education, no college degree – not even a high school degree – is required to become a copywriter. Everything a copywriter does can be learned. And really all that is needed to get started are a computer and Internet connection.

The basics can be picked up easily, allowing new copywriters to pick up paying projects quickly, just months after they get started. As a copywriter develops more advanced skills, the more lucrative projects they take on. Top copywriters can bring in six figures annually.

Freelance copywriter Shern Darcheville is just one of the hundreds of AWAI-trained freelancers who are able to pursue their dreams thanks to this skill. Shern splits his time between homes on Jamaica and his native St. Lucia. He also has the chance to stay home with his daughter while his wife is at school finishing her degree.

He discovered copywriting through AWAI in 2000. Direct-response marketing is unknown on his home island. But he persevered and eventually was offered an in-house position with online powerhouse Agora Publishing. There he decided to specialize in financial copywriting, which serves companies that publish investment newsletters and offer trading services.

Shern went freelance last April, and his new career has really taken off. His current clients include a major financial publishing company out of Baltimore as well as another in in Canada.

He credits AWAI with helping him on his journey to success.

“They opened a new world to me I never knew existed. Truth is no one in St. Lucia understands what I do now, except my wife,” says Shern. “It really is a mystery to my family and friends who all have ‘normal’ jobs.”

“There is nothing better than heading to the beach by 2 p.m. after you put in a good solid five hours of work early in the morning. Plus the time I spend with my baby girl at home is priceless.

Shern’s story is not unique among copywriters. Many find that this career gives them the freedom and flexibility to set their own schedule, spend as much with friends and family – or on their favorite hobbies – as they want, put away plenty of money for retirement, and still make very comfortable livings.
