Jan Miller, an elementary school teacher by trade, started the Stander company with her own grandmother as her inspiration. Miller's Grandma Essie celebrated her 90th birthday in 1997, with her mind as sharp as ever and a home full of family visitors, but shortly after, Essie's physical health started to deteriorate and what used to be simple daily tasks had become very difficult for her. Her loving family found a fabulous assisted living facility for their beloved matriarch to live out her remaining life in, with all the luxuries money could buy, but there was one small problem: Grandma Essie had no intention of moving into any type of 'nursing home', no matter how many amenities it boasted, and instead was determined to maintain her independence and dignity by living out her years in her own home that her late husband had built 50 years earlier. And thanks to her granddaughter, this is exactly what she ended up doing.

Rehabmart.com, an online e-commerce company that sells rehabilitation and medical supplies, has joined into a distribution partnership with Stander , Incorporated, to offer mobility equipment, safety bed rails, rolling walkers and other mobility aids to a larger consumer market.

Miller wanted to help fulfill her grandmother's wishes, but was unsure how to go about it. “I lived 500 miles away from Granny,” said Miller. “None of the extended family was able to uproot and move in with her, so we spent thousands of dollars on a complete line of home medical equipment that was supposed to make living at home easier. But despite all of the walkers, grab bars and bath benches we provided, Granny still had difficulty performing simple daily tasks like getting in and out of bed, or standing from a couch or car.” Since one of Miller's lifelong goals was to be a positive contribution to society, she found that her own grandmother's dilemma could be combined with this goal, by creating and providing much needed affordable assistive devices that would actually help the elderly and disabled to maintain their independence without being forced into a nursing home or hospital. Miller quit her teaching job in 1998 and formed the Stander company; an inventor and manufacturer of affordable mobility devices for the elderly and disabled.

Miller knew that the secret to their success was in the product design, which would be accomplished by finding the right engineer. Fortunately, she was married to a real live rocket scientist, Troy Miller, who, after a grueling interview process, was awarded the job! The BedCane, CouchCane and CarCaddie were Stander's first three inventions, designed specifically to solve Grandma Essie's biggest mobility challenges; getting in and out of a bed, couch or automobile. Thanks to these inventions, Grandma Essie was able to live out her life comfortably and independently in the privacy of her own home, and so have many other Stander product users ever since. Today, the Stander product line consists of over thirty innovative mobility solutions, with more in the development process. The EZ Adjust Bed Rail is another very popular Stander product and is the only bed rail on the market that adjusts in length after it is installed on the bed. “We are proud to offer these assistive mobility solutions from Stander to more consumers,” said Hulet Smith, Founder and CEO of Rehabmart. “From safety bed rails, grab bars and canes to crutches, security poles, rolling walkers and risers, the Stander products that we carry at Rehabmart.com provide successful mobility solutions for everyone.”
