The Shakedown, a new bar beginning operation tonight located at 1212 N. State St. in downtown Bellingham, WA, is hosting three shows during its grand opening weekend. As a medium-sized music venue serving food until closing, the bar is going to fill a need that’s been left open in the area for some time.
“As someone who’s been involved with the Bellingham music scene for many years, both as a show-goer and a performer, I decided I wanted to do something to give back to the community,” said owner Hollie Huthman. “I hope to create a place that’s comfortable for music fans and musicians alike, whether there is a show that night or not.”
Huthman said that Krissa Woiwood is creating a food menu that includes bahn mi (Vietnamese Sandwiches), meat candy and standard bar fare like french fries and tator tots.
“The menu will change depending on what time it is,” Huthman said. “A full menu will be available until about 9:00 PM, then the menu is limited to hand-held items so the audience can eat while enjoying the band. At the end of the night, a to-go menu will be available so you can get a quick order in as you are cashing out.”
The first of the three events taking place during its grand opening is a St. Patrick’s Day celebration happening tonight, featuring Irish music by MacArra, 8 Hand Reel and Peader Macmahon. The show is $5.00 and starts at 8 PM. Friday, March 18, brings a reunion performance from post-hardcore Tacoma band Harkonen, along with Dog Shredder, Lozen and Swayze. Music starts at 9 PM and tickets can be purchased at the door for $8.00 or in advance at this link for $5.00. The final show as part of the grand opening will take place on Saturday, March 19. Six local bands will play a free show: Rooftops, Todos Somos Lee, Marriage, The Slacks, The Daffodils and Bright Weapons. The bar opens at 4 PM with music starting at 6 PM.
