Giving away free ice cream is not something new for Ben & Jerry's. After a year of selling their homemade flavour concoctions, they wanted 'an ice' way to thank customers and the community for their loyalty and so Free Cone Day event was born. An instant success, (well, how could it go wrong?) it's now embraced by ice cream fans each year, all over the world - from Atlanta to Amsterdam, and now here in Australia.

Ben & Jerry's broke the ice Down Under in Spring 2009. Ice cream lovers can now get their fix with a range of 18 flavours available at the Ben & Jerry's flagship Scoop Shop in Manly, Sydney. A selection of flavours is also available in 458ml pint tubs (RRP $11.95) and 100ml shorties (RRP $3.95) in select delis around Sydney and Melbourne. If that's not sweet enough, now Aussie ice cream fans can get ready for ice cream euphoria when Free Cone Day rolls around in April.

Caroline Simpson (aka 'Scoop Dogg') Ben & Jerry’s Brand Champion says: "Free Cone Day has become an international phenomenon with over 25 countries participating this year. Ben & Jerry's gave away over a million scoops worldwide in 2009 so we plan to top that and some now that Australia is on board too. Knowing how popular the annual event is across the globe, we anticipate a lot of excitement in Manly on the day and challenge all ice cream fanatics to come along to our scoop shop and try all 18 of our Aussie flavourites."

The Ben & Jerry's story:
Back in 1966, in a school gym class, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield found they hated running but loved food. Years later in 1978, armed with a $5 correspondence course in ice cream making, they opened their first scoop shop in a dilapidated gas station in Burlington, Vermont.

The duo soon became popular in the local community for the finest all natural ice cream. Ben had no sense of taste so he relied on what he called 'mouth feel', so big chunks of chocolate, fruit and nut became their signature. While they disagreed at times over the chunk size, they did agree that they wanted to enjoy themselves – as Jerry put it ‘If it's not fun, why do it?

In the early days the boys were pretty bad at bookkeeping. After two months they closed the store and hung a sign that said 'we're closed to figure out whether we're making any money'. And they weren't. But they learned a lot and by 1979, began wholesaling pints of ice cream out of Ben's VW campervan. The rest, as they say, is history.
