Benovia Winery in Santa Rosa, CA, has promoted Co-Owner and Winemaker Mike Sullivan to the position of General Manager, according to Benovia Founder Joe Anderson. Sullivan will continue to make his acclaimed Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Zinfandel wines at the Russian River Valley winery while becoming more involved in day-to-day operations and future endeavors of the Sonoma County premium wine producer.

I’m really excited about this new challenge to put even more of my personal stamp on the continued success of Benovia.

Benovia Winery Founder and Chairman of the Board Joe Anderson today announced the promotion of Benovia Winemaker and Co-Owner Mike Sullivan to General Manager of the Russian River Valley producer of premium Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Zinfandel wines.

In addition to continuing his critically acclaimed work as Benovia’s winemaker, Mr. Sullivan will now take the lead in all day-to-day operations of the winery as well as provide the vision needed to guide the business smartly into the future Mr. Anderson said.

“Mike’s wines are consistently amazing. He’s earned his place among the very best after 20 years,” Mr. Anderson says of Mr. Sullivan who has garnered numerous industry accolades throughout his winemaking career. “Mike also has a savvy business sense and an impassioned vision for the future that are every bit as valuable to Benovia as his winemaking prowess,” added Mr. Anderson. “I really want to see him take Benovia to the next level.”

Joining Benovia in 2005 after a successful tenure at Hartford Court, Mr. Sullivan quickly grew comfortable wearing many different hats at the upstart winery. “It’s been a rare opportunity to build a winery basically from scratch, including planting 45 new acres of vineyards in the Russian River Valley and taking complete control of the winemaking process,” Mr. Sullivan says. “I’m really excited about this new challenge to put even more of my personal stamp on the continued success of Benovia.”

Mr. Anderson also announced long-time Benovia team member Bob Mosby will assume the newly-created position of Director of Sales. With countless Benovia wine tastings and multi-state “road shows” under his belt, Mr. Mosby says his new job description will allow him to focus on what he loves best. “Guiding folks through the Benovia tasting experience has been very rewarding to me,” Mr. Mosby says. “My new mission will be to bring that same joy of discovery to a much larger audience outside of the winery.”

Mr. Anderson also hinted that other exciting changes would be coming to the winery. “We’ve invested a lot of time, hard work and capital to stand out in a very crowded market,” says Mr. Anderson. “After three sold-out vintages, Benovia’s original team has exceeded my expectations as a founder. Now it’s time to fine-tune our management base to support what we’re certain will be an even brighter future for the winery.”

Founded by husband and wife team Joe Anderson and Mary Dewane, and joined by winemaker partner Mike Sullivan, Benovia Winery farms more than 72 acres of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Zinfandel from estate vineyards in the Russian River Valley and Sonoma County. The name of the winery is derived from Joe and Mary’s fathers' names, Novian Anderson and Ben Dewane. Established in 2005, Benovia’s mission is to create iconic and thought-provoking “Grand Cru quality” Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Zinfandel wines. Benovia wines are sold through an allocation system direct to customers, as well as distributed to select restaurants nationwide. Total production for the current release (2009 vintage) is approximately 4,000 cases. Winery tastings and tours are available daily by appointment only.
