Quality checking options are definitely on the decline, but we're showing depositors that they still exist on the local level. Chicago residents who are willing to do a bit of comparison can find a solid account from a bank or credit union close by.

Checking accounts have been at the forefront of depositors' minds since outrage over growing fees came to a head in 2011, prompting a close look at the checking options offered by financial institutions. ChicagoBankingRates.com, an online banking resource for residents of Chicago, Illinois, recently investigated today's Chicago checking account options to identify the best accounts presently available in the city.

"Looking at factors such as fees, account minimums, and interest rates, we were able to come up with a list of five checking options that set the bar high for other Chicago institutions," explains Casey Bond, managing editor for ChicagoBankingRates.

Great Lakes Credit Union topped the site's list with its "Ultimate Checking" account, which requires no monthly fees, no minimum balance, and an excellent 4% APY on balances up to $10,000.

Planites Credit Union took the second spot for offering Chicago residents free checking as well, as long as they maintain a reasonable $200 minimum balance. Additionally, the credit union provides members widespread access to their checking funds with over 32,000 surcharge-free ATMs on the STAR, Allpoint and CO-OP Networks.

Ms. Bond adds, "Quality checking options are definitely on the decline, but we're showing depositors that they still exist on the local level. Chicago residents who are willing to do a bit of comparison can find a solid account from a bank or credit union close by."
