The BDR treatment model is designed to be adaptable to anybody that comes to us seeking help in overcoming addictive behaviors. A major part of that is learning ways to successfully manage and control the urge to use drugs or alcohol.

In a recent report published by the University of Guelph on April 7th 2015, researchers found a direct relationship between the occurrence of dreams involving substance abuse and an increased desire to use drugs and alcohol.

The study was conducted over five weeks with 86 participants who, using dream journal methodology, reported the frequency and content of their dreams and rated the effects on their level of craving.

The study concluded that drug dreams sometimes act as a substance-conditioned stimulus to those in recovery from addiction, elevating the negative affect during waking hours and increasing their overall desire to use their drug of choice. While stimulant users (crack/cocaine/amphetamines) reported a higher affect on their craving than did other drug groups (opiates or alcohol), all groups studied reported at least some increase in their desire to use after having dreams that involved active drug use.

The results of this study indicate the need for a more in-depth treatment model in recovery from substance abuse and addiction.
