Earl Abel's Restaurant, known for its "Simply Delicious" fried chicken and its award winning pies and cakes, marks its 80th year serving the San Antonio community in 2013.

It was November 1933 when silent film organist Earl Abel opened his first restaurant on Main Avenue. The Great Depression was in full swing and the onset of "talkies" left high paid entertainers such as Abel without a job. Abel decided to travel the country looking for work, but, as fate would have it, he ended up never leaving San Antonio. Through many ups and downs, Earl Abel's stood the test of time, primarily with his great food but also by using his skills as an entertainer, often telling jokes to his guests. Through the years, up to five additional locations were opened, but it was one location that opened in 1940 on Broadway and Hildebrand that became the landmark restaurant. The current location on Austin Highway, now in its eighth year, still embodies Earl's humor, original style and integrity to quality and service.

In 2006, The Texas Historical Commission named Earl Abel's one of Texas' historic business Texas Treasures. The THC Texas Treasure program pays tribute to the state's well-established businesses and their exceptional historical contributions toward the state's economic growth and prosperity. Earl Abel's is one of only 37 businesses in the state in business over 50 years that have received this recognition by the Texas Historical Commission. The popular restaurant is proud of this accomplishment and hopes to be serving San Antonio for many more years to come.

Today, Earl Abel's remains popular as a place for business meetings and has many regular customers that dine here daily. Customers still come for the fried chicken but also love their home-style foods and signature desserts. The restaurant features local foods, such as Texas bison burgers, Texas Kobe beef burgers and Texas venison sausage; and Texas beers from Real Ale Brewing Company. In addition, all breads used in sandwiches and burgers are purchased from The New World Bakery out of Kyle, Texas. These breads are made fresh daily without preservatives, meeting Earl Abel’s goal of eliminating preservatives in the foods it serves.

Earl Abel's is also using the latest technological tools to stay in touch with their customers; and to make it more convenient for them to enjoy their favorite foods. The restaurant has recently unveiled a mobile app accessible with any smart phone that allows customers to order their meal using Earl Abel's new online ordering system, where they can schedule an order for pickup at a convenient time, or have the order conveniently delivered right to their home. The mobile app also notifies customers of special events at the restaurant, promos and other exciting restaurant news.

As Earl Abel himself said, "Eat Here and Diet Home."
