GuySpy achieves exceptional growth and closes the gap with Grindr. GuySpy’s popular gay blog and innovative GPS, photo, video and social features were the strongest contributors to its growth.
In a year marked by significant strides forward (and backwards) in the LGBT movement, gay social networks have provided a defined space for members of the LGBT community to meet and socialize. While Facebook remains the undisputed leader in social networks, products such as GuySpy have positioned themselves as a great place for gay men to meet, to chat, to exchange photos and videos, and to read great original content written specifically for gay men.
“GuySpy has a fantastic gay blog that attracts readers interested in a variety of topics, from entertainment to health to advocacy. Our bloggers are some of the most respected writers in the gay community, and our blog is home to exclusive stories that you won’t find anywhere else,” states Morris Chapdelaine, Executive Editor of GuySpy. “We have exclusive interviews with stars such as Olivia Newton-John, Peter Marc Jacobson, Colton Ford, and Cyndi Lauper, just to name a few. In 2012, we’re expanding our stable of bloggers, and the content is going to be even more mind-blowing!”
In addition to its highly acclaimed gay blog, GuySpy offers both mobile and web apps that use location-based services, such as GPS, to connect gay, bi and curious users for free live gay chat. Users can find gay men by location, view profiles and photos, upload and listen to voice greetings, send and receive video and image files, and text chat.
Unlike some of its competitors, such as Grindr and Manhunt, GuySpy integrates social networking into its products. “What we’ve created is a gay social network, contained within the GuySpy brand,” says Jeff Prete, General Manager of Stark Mobile Media. “One thing we noted when surveying the landscape of gay men’s applications is the lack of any real social networking opportunities. The interfaces of Grindr and Manhunt are old and limiting. We built a product that leverages the best of social media with fantastic original content, and wrapped it in a technology bundle that is miles ahead of our competitors. We have video in chat, we have multi-photo albums, we let our members switch to ‘travel mode’ so they can check out guys in other cities, and we’ve integrated our awesome gay blog into our app. We’re confident that we have the most complete gay social networking app available today.”
GuySpy debuted its iPhone app in October of 2010. Since then, GuySpy for Android, GuySpy for Mobile Web, and GuySpy for Web have been added to the product line. To date, over 200,000 guys have downloaded the app across 18 countries.
