The Midnight launch across the globe drew in record numbers of Call of Duty fans, marked by release parties, celebrity appearances, theatrical display notwithstanding laser shows, and most of all, serious gamers fully intent on playing Black Ops 2 all through the night. With serious bragging rights going to those first few to beat out the game, making their way all the way through its engrossing big-screen-like storyline is just too tempting to miss.
Only a week ago, “Halo 4” brought in more money than any of its predecessors with a $220 million one-day total. To lend a little perspective to that number, the current record holder for movie ticket sales is $80.5 million, for the opening of “The Avengers” this summer. Now Black Ops is expected to rival even that. According to Microsoft, the game is on its way to reach $300 million in global sales for its first week, making it “the biggest U.S. entertainment launch of the year.”
A News and Technology Consumer blog reported, “Call of Duty: Black Ops II will have avid gamers playing all night long. Some fans of the popular first-person shooter already have taken the day off. But don't be surprised if a few co-workers call in sick suffering from a Black Ops II hangover.”
College student Shaquille Davis, for example, found among the ranks of the Call of Duty devout at a GameStop commented, "I'm excited I finally got it. I'm about to go back and play it, probably going to stay up all night." He was only one of many, the majority of which had been at GameStop since Monday afternoon. Some said that they planned on skipping school on Tuesday so that they could play the game for 48 hours straight.
Louis Totoro, a high school student, admitted, "I have at least about 35 to 40 friends that are already staying home just to play this game tonight.”
Within the first 17 hours released, Call of Duty tweeted “More than a billion hours of #BlackOps2 have already been played #GTTVBlackOps2,” and just an hour later, “117 Million kills confirmed in the first 18 hours of worldwide game-play, starting with Australia.”
