The era of data scarcity and benefiting from keeping consumers in the dark is drawing to a close.

Today BuildZoom announced the launch of ProRank, a simple visual explanation of where a home improvement contractor ranks compared to every other contractor in their area.

ProRank is based on the BuildZoom ranking algorithm, which analyzes information on over 1.8 million contractors nationwide. Each contractor is ranked based on data from authorities like the state license board; social data including consumer reviews and Facebook likes, and information volunteered by the contractors themselves.

“The era of data scarcity and benefiting from keeping consumers in the dark is drawing to a close,” explained Jiyan Wei, co-Founder of BuildZoom. “With more information publicly available, consumers have become empowered to make better choices about what products to buy and which service providers to hire.”

BuildZoom has spent over two years refining its algorithm that analyzes and ranks service providers.

“Initially, our challenge was to completely understand the method that a consumer should go through in order to make an educated hiring decision,” said David Petersen, co-founder of BuildZoom. “This method involved a combination of researching businesses with institutions that regulated the industry, seeing samples of past work completed, getting customer references and comparison shopping.”

The next challenge was to automate this process at scale, which was achieved through a combination of crowdsourcing and data collection.

According to Petersen, “Once we had collected all the necessary data, we needed a simple way to help consumers make sense of that information, so we came up with ProRank and the early feedback has been very positive.”

Moving forward, BuildZoom plans to explore more ways of representing its large collection of data on the remodeling industry.

“Every day we are learning more from the thousands of consumers who use our service,” said Wei. “Our roadmap for the remainder of the year is filled with enhancements that will help make BuildZoom even more useful to consumers, which is our ultimate goal.”

About BuildZoom

BuildZoom uses big data to help consumers find reliable service providers in the remodeling industry using a ranking algorithm, which analyzes information on over 1.8 million contractors nationwide. Each contractor is ranked based on data from authorities like the state license board and Better Business Bureau; social data including consumer reviews and Facebook likes, and information volunteered by the contractors themselves. This information is then made freely available to consumers on BuildZoom.com, where they can browse and search contractor profiles and work samples to find the right home improvement contractor for their next project.
