Speed, convenience, service and knowledge all play a more important role as consumers seek better prices, better selection, better service, and better products.

BigCrumbs.com, a free online shopping rewards program, engaged Mindspot, Inc., a marketing research and solutions company, to conduct a qualitative online survey of its members about attitudes and intentions for holiday spending. Two-thousand members responded.

Eighty-two percent (82%) of respondents stated they plan to spend the same or less than what they spent in 2009, cutting back to buying mostly or only for family (89%).

In addition to offering cash back at eBay and over 1200 other top online stores, BigCrumbs.com offers thousands of deals and coupons on electronics, computers, fashion, footwear, office supplies, jewelry, toys, travel and more. When asked to rate the top three most desirable types of gifts they will purchase this season, respondents listed:

  •     Clothing (48%)
  •     Computer and computer equipment (34%)
  •     Toys (27%).

Forty-percent (40%) of respondents stated they will increase their online shopping this holiday season, joining the fifty-two percent (52%) who expect to maintain about the same level of online spending as last year, citing:

  •     Convenience (88%)
  •     Online savings (76%)
  •     Finding it quicker and easier to compare items and costs (64%)
  •     Hating to fight “mall” traffic (56%)
  •     Finding it quicker to shop online (54%)
  •     Better online selections (51%).

Significantly, ninety-eight (98%) reported they will shop more at online retailers that allow the use of discounts, rewards, or cash back; sixty-four percent (64%) will shop using BigCrumbs.com for some or all of their online purchases.

“Consumers are increasingly interested in getting maximum value for their money,” said Vince Martin, BigCrumbs CEO. “Speed, convenience, service and knowledge all play a more important role as consumers seek better prices, better selection, better service, and better products. Merchants who are unable to capitalize on this trend will increasingly miss out on opportunities to reach consumers."

Since December of last year, the number of retailers featured on the BigCrumbs site has doubled to more than 1200. "We continue to add partnerships with new merchants that align with our overall program goals of offering our members a high-quality selection, best value, and overall highest cash back rates available anywhere.” Martin continued. “Our members are rewarded for doing two things that they already do: shop online and tell friends when they find a great deal. It's truly a win-win situation.”

The 2009 holiday e-commerce spending was reported at $21.9 billion. If respondents were likely to spend more this holiday season, 77% stated it would be because of rewards websites like BigCrumbs.
