As long as there have been courageous men and women willing to protect our Union and our ideals, there have been extraordinary spouses at their side -- patriots in their own right who serve and sacrifice in ways many cannot fathom.

Friday, May 10, 2013, President Obama signed a Presidential proclamation acknowledging Military Spouse Appreciation Day, 2013. The proclamation states, “As long as there have been courageous men and women willing to protect our Union and our ideals, there have been extraordinary spouses at their side -- patriots in their own right who serve and sacrifice in ways many cannot fathom. They are moms and dads who take up the work of two during deployments, shuffling their careers and packing up their lives whenever our Nation calls. They are dedicated employees at our businesses, committed volunteers in our communities, and essential caretakers for our wounded warriors. America's military spouses are at the core of our Armed Forces, and on Military Spouse Appreciation Day, we celebrate their contributions to keeping our country safe.“
Big Game Gear employee, Misti Ridgeway is one of these dedicated employees committed to volunteering and serving our nation on the home front as her husband serves in a war zone. Instead of pampering herself to a much needed spa day or flowers, she spent Military Spouse Appreciation Day collecting and packing much needed items for the USO Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan. Misti says that, “Giving back and helping others, helps me not only survive deployment; but giving back allows me to thrive during deployment.”
Mrs. Ridgeway provided a local elementary with a hands on lesson in community service and patriotism as she helped them organize a collection for soldiers serving in Afghanistan. USO FOB in Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan sent out a message requesting assistance, “We need your help. With the influx of troops coming and going we have run out of everything!” Big Game Gear posted a press release last month urging others to donate to the USO. Students, faculty and staff of Big Game Gear's headquarter local schools responded to this plea and generously donated items and made monetary donations for the USO at Camp Leatherneck.
With a can do attitude, Misti taught students how to sort donated items and properly pack thirty-two boxes for the soldiers in Afghanistan. Students learned about the USO and how the USO provides comfort and support to deployed soldiers and their families. Items collected included candy bars, cookies, pop tarts, popcorn, soap, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, mouthwash, sunscreen, Chap Stick, and body powder. With the support of the community and her dedication to our military service members, thirty-two boxes of goodies were mailed to those serving in Afghanistan on Monday, May 13, 2013.
