UNM Hospital is committed to improving patient safety. Neoteric's BloodTrack system will provide our staff and patients with the most advanced blood delivery system in North America. Not only will it provide us with security, and control of our remote blood inventory, but we will now be able to provide blood to patients more quickly and safely

Neoteric Technology Ltd. announced today that the University of New Mexico Hospital (UNM) and TriCore Reference Laboratories have selected the BloodTrack(R) system to provide tracking, control and allocation of their blood inventory at seven remote refrigerator locations.

UNM is the only level I trauma center serving a draw area of approximately 2 million people. It is also home to a National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Research and Treatment Center as well as UNM Children's Hospital. TriCore is UNM Hospital's laboratory partner, providing blood banking and other lab services.

"UNM Hospital is committed to improving patient safety. Neoteric's BloodTrack system will provide our staff and patients with the most advanced blood delivery system in North America. Not only will it provide us with security, and control of our remote blood inventory, but we will now be able to provide blood to patients more quickly and safely," said Dr. Kendall Crookston, Director of Transfusion Medicine at UNM Hospital and a Medical Director for TriCore Reference Laboratories.

"The UNM Hospitals will be a showcase site for our complete BloodTrack system in North America. In addition to better security and control of blood in the hospital, our system will give surgeons and anesthesiologist the safety and security of knowing their patients will have the right unit of blood available in less than 60 seconds," said Geof Auchinleck, Neoteric's president.

Neoteric's BloodTrack system includes Courier, a kiosk that secures and tracks blood in and out of refrigerators; HemoNine, a computer controlled nine-drawer locking refrigerator; and HemoSafe, a sophisticated blood dispensing refrigerator that automatically allocates blood on demand and then dispenses the right blood for the right patient.

Neoteric will initially be providing to The University of New Mexico Hospital one HemoSafe refrigerator, two HemoNine refrigerators, and five refrigerator-linked Courier kiosks to track and dispense thousands of units a year. It is anticipated that this system will be extended to the new state-of-the-art facility currently under construction to house the expanding UNM Cancer Research and Treatment Center.

About BloodTrack System

BloodTrack allows allocated and unallocated blood units to be securely stored outside of the blood bank. This provides remote locations such as emergency rooms, operating rooms, and satellite hospitals with 24/7 access to blood when they need it without having to contact the blood bank.

Increases safety

BloodTrack HemoSafe provides access to only the most appropriate blood unit for the patient by opening only one of its individually locking 150 compartments (or nine locking drawers in the case of the HemoNine), and only after the patient has been correctly identified. This helps ensure that the right blood is removed for the right patient.

Saves time and money

The BloodTrack OnDemand process allows unallocated blood so that users can safely allocate a unit when, where and only if it's needed. For example, in the operating room, instead of cross-matching 4 units of blood and sending them ahead of time, the anaesthetist can allocate units using the HemoSafe or HemoNine as they are needed. This saves the time and money associated with the transport, cross-matching, labeling and additional inventory of units that aren't transfused.

Easy to use

The BloodTrack kiosks and refrigerators are equipped with touch-screens so you do not need a mouse or keyboard to use the system. It's simple and easy to use and can be used by anyone with minimal training. When errors are detected during movement of blood units or transfusion of blood units, the Blood Bank is instantly alerted via both visual and audible means. This enables Blood Bank staff to be proactive and intercede at the earliest opportunity in order to minimize potential consequences.
