We've had a Barefoot Bowls event before on Australia Day, and it was a great success. We Aussies are all about being with our mates in a laidback atmosphere. We hope to continue organising typically Aussie-type events so that the community here - and their Singaporean friends too - can get an authentic experience of Australian lifestyle and culture.
Singapore (Vocus) April 2, 2009
Come Saturday, 25th April, Aussie bistro & bar Boomarang at Robertson Quay will play host to hundreds of frolicking bare feet.
To commemorate ANZAC Day here, local Aussie and Kiwi expatriates in teams of two will battle it out against each other in traditional style, with a game of Barefoot Bowls - the Australian version of lawn bowls made casually popular in the last decade where players take off their shoes to play.
A green carpet of "lawn" will be set up near the bistro's riverfront terrace and delicious barbeque dishes and cool beers will accompany the merrymaking which will start at 10am for registration.
All players who register receive a FREE Bacon & Egg Roll fresh off the BBQ and a Crown Lager beer. Barefoot Bowls will then commence at 11am sharp, with three 'celebrity' judges including half-Australian, half-Chinese Jaymee Ong overseeing the formalities.
ANZAC Day commemorates the tragedy of the Australian and New Zealand armies at Gallipoli where the soldiers fought bravely during the First World War, but were defeated at the hands of the Turkish army. In Australia and New Zealand, people will begin the day with a dawn service in remembrance of the lost lives but as the day progresses, merrymaking with friends and family eventually take over.
It is this spirit of celebration and camaraderie that Boomarang intends to create for the local Aussie and Kiwi expat community during their Barefoot Bowls event.
Says Boomarang Director, Kate McGettigan: "We've had a Barefoot Bowls event before on Australia Day, and it was a great success. We Aussies are all about being with our mates in a laidback atmosphere. We hope to continue organising typically Aussie-type events so that the community here - and their Singaporean friends too - can get an authentic experience of Australian lifestyle and culture."
The trophy presentation by the celebrity judges for the Barefoot Bowls winners will be announced at 3pm.
Also happening in the afternoon is a typically Aussie 'sausage sizzle' and the AFL ANZAC Day clash will be shown on Boomarang's four big screens at around 5pm. Night-time will see top-line DJ Sean Lavan playing true-blue classics.
Boomarang also hopes to promote its Sunday event as a "hangover recovery session" for mates to get together after a hard Saturday night of partying. A steak and a sausage sandwich will be on the menu as the signature offer, together with Bloody Mary's to drown out the pre-evening's hangover!
