Our mission at BORLA® – to create stainless steel exhausts that optimize engine sound while simultaneously maximizing vehicle performance – might well be seen as a bold technical objective.

BORLA®, the world leader in the design and manufacture of American made high quality performance exhaust systems, has received its latest patent for advanced exhaust technology. U.S. Patent 8,439,159 (May 2013) was issued for muffler engineering innovations that draw on unique internal architectures and advanced air-flow dynamics to achieve highly effective sound attenuation without diminishing engine power.

“Our mission at BORLA® – to create stainless steel exhausts that optimize engine sound while simultaneously maximizing vehicle performance – might well be seen as a bold technical objective,” said Alyse Borla, Co-Founder and President. “But, for us, that challenge is simply a test of our experience and ingenuity. Our patents represent validation of industry leadership spanning over three decades.”

Alex Borla, Co-Founder and Chief Technical Officer, explained key advances embodied in this latest patent. “We have long known that efficient exhaust sound management is as much – or more – about controlling gas-flow velocity, temperature, and direction as it is about conducting gases through sound-reduction media. This new patent is, largely, about breakthroughs we’ve achieved in this regard, and the resultant ability to develop compact, durable, affordable mufflers with custom tuned frequency properties and decibel levels unique to the marketplace that impose little or no increase in back pressure.”

The patented technology is both elegant and sophisticated. A conventional outer casing conceals an internal system of precisely sized and shaped tubes. Among the more than two dozen claims that the patent grants are such specific criteria as:

  •     Frustoconically-shaped entrance and exit collars at each end of the casing;
  •     Inner assemblies of nested perforated and non-perforated tubes;
  •     Tubes formed with rounded and/or flat-sided walls;
  •     Venturi structures located along the length of one or more tubes;
  •     Tubes arrayed in either parallel or circular configurations along the longitudinal axis of the muffler.
