no aesthetic procedure is desirable at this time.
Beverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) February 2, 2010
Despite being widely publicized, it is a little known fact that Botox injections happen to be the most common cosmetic procedure performed by aesthetic medical professionals in the United States. Receiving its first FDA approval in 1989, the procedure has since risen in popularity over the decades and in 2008 has topped the list of most commonly performed non-invasive cosmetic procedures. In total, about 2.4 million Botox injections were performed, at a cost well over $1.5 billion.
Interested in measuring the attitudes of a more localized sample of women in regards to Botox injections, Celibre Medical Corporation, a Southern California-based cosmetic dermatology center set out to evaluate the popularity of Botox in the metropolitan areas of Los Angeles and Orange Counties, by conducting their own poll and asking participants to indicate which cosmetic procedure they felt was most common. The choices that were given were breast enhancement, liposuction, laser hair removal, rhinoplasty, and of course Botox injections.
The results of the poll were surprising, as 51% of the participants elected breast enhancement as the most common procedure. While a significant proportion of our sample correctly chose Botox (45%), it is quite disconcerting to see such a large proportion of the participants be in the wrong.
To test for potential bias, we compared the results to a measure of individual preference. That is, Celibre Medical designed a follow up question, inquiring about whether the survey participant would elect a free cosmetic procedure at this same time, and if so what it would be. The choices from the initial question were provided, (breast enhancement, liposuction, laser hair removal, rhinoplasty, and Botox), in addition to a few new additions: tummy tuck, laser resurfacing, and eyelid surgery.
It was interesting to discover that the majority of the participants (49%) would have opted for Botox injections over any alternative cosmetic procedure, hypothetically offered at the same time, and at no cost. Second highest choice was breast enhancement (31%), followed by laser hair removal (8%), liposuction (4%), and laser resurfacing (2%). 6% of participants chose “no aesthetic procedure is desirable at this time."
Of the individuals who selected breast enhancement as their choice for the most commonly performed aesthetic procedure, there was about a 35% participant match to those who also selected it as the preferred choice for plastic surgery. That match rate being statistically insignificant, rules out any possibility of a correlation between personal preference for cosmetic surgery and the perception of potential trends in plastic surgery.
Therefore, 2 conclusions could be drawn from this survey: (1) More information should be readily available to educate the general public on contemporary aesthetic medical procedures, and (2) it appears that Botox is in fact the most sought after cosmetic procedure of the modern woman who would (or is) consider(ing) cosmetic work.
If you are someone who is considering Botox, make sure to choose the right injection administrator! To ensure that your unique needs are met by the physician, Celibre Medical recommends asking the following 5 questions:
-How much experience does the administrator have
-How much the procedure will cost
-Whether you can view Botox before and after pictures
-Procedures for dealing with a less-than-satisfying outcome
-Are there any issues that apply to your unique situation
Finally, make sure that your doctor is properly certified and uses the latest techniques in injection administration.
At Celibre Medical, we focus on patient education. With that in mind, we hope to help everyone understand the real cost of various cosmetic procedures, their benefits and any potential dangers.
