The war of the facial wrinkle relaxers--Botox ® Cosmetic by Allergan, and Dysport ® marketed by Medicis--began with neurotoxin competitor Dysport ® entering the ring in May of 2009--vying for a portion of the aesthetics market sector created by, and 'owned' by heavyweight Allergan's wonder-toxin Botox ®. Botox ® vs. Dysport ®- Round Two of the U.S. Wrinkle War

Round two, and one of the most heated consumer product battles of this decade is in full swing, with 'haymaker' punches and strong defensive moves. The war of the facial wrinkle relaxers--Botox ® Cosmetic by Allergan, and Dysport ® marketed by Medicis--began with newcomer Dysport ® entering the ring ready to rumble--vying for a segment of the U.S. aesthetics industry created by Allergan's wonder-toxin Botox ®. Against the backdrop of the recent U.S. economy, Botox® sales have remained strong even while medical consumers postponed more costly cosmetic surgical options--perhaps not wishing to show how concerned they were about the state of their dwindling 401ks. Both parent companies, Allergan and Medicis are now fairly matched with comparable neurotoxins and hyaluronic acid dermal filler families. Lined up across from one another--Allergan's Botox ® and Juvederm ® on one side, Medicis' Dysport ® and Restylane ®/Perlane ® on the other--the stage could very well be set for the opening act of 'West Side Story'.

Botox ®, thus far, has maintained a defensive stance, shoring up their consumer base by combining thousands of individual physician loyalty campaigns into one gargantuan marketing database to pour into their new 'Botox ® Brilliant Distinctions ™' program.
