Eben Goresko, a boulder piano tuner and technical expert, initiates "Tuning the Rockies" starting December 1, 2010. The purpose of this new outreach initiative is to help piano owners throughout Colorado accomplish their dream of having more music in their lives and to educate people interested in learning more about the important link between piano tuning and music.
Goresko, who also administers a regional piano buyer guide says, "many folks often begin their musical journey by buying a new or used instrument and so many of them want to or want their kids to play piano so badly but then they hit a snag. The snag can be anything; work schedules, competing school activities to name a few. Then later on, sometimes years, they forget why they own a piano in the first place."
Goresko talks further about some pitfalls. "At this juncture many of these folks rationalize that 'if we don't use it, we don't need to tune it.' This kind of thinking is a big mistake and often leads to damage to the wood, felts, hammers, action parts, soundboard and pinblock. The trick for those who own pianos that are unused, sitting around and at risk is to avoid costly piano restoration, refinishing and repairs. The best way to prevent damage to their musical instruments is to have them tuned (and monitored) on a regular basis by an expert. How often? At least once a year."
"Another outcome I often see is where the piano survives major damage but is still in need of all the routine maintenance that it hasn't gotten for years. It functions in such a substandard fashion that the owners musical ambitions become a casualty. It's like the person who has a car with flat tires, poor steering and is hard to start. Who wants to try to drive a car like that? I call these forgotten pianos POA's - piano shaped objects."
Says Goresko,"it is easy for lay people to misunderstand the purpose of piano tuning because pianos are unlike all other instruments. Put forty thousand pounds - twenty tons of tension on a structure built from 80% wood and you are looking for trouble if you don't keep an eye on it. So many things can go wrong and they do."
"Piano tuning is about preventative maintenance. While tuning, the expert piano technician can quickly detect problems and appraise the structural health of the instrument. In a unique fashion, tuning enables him to determine the condition of the action and the effect on the structure from potentially destructive in home perils such as excessive heat, dryness, humidity or fluctuations between the two, pestilence, excessive sunlight, just to name a few."
Through "Tuning the Rockies", Goresko will offer his piano technical services for people throughout the whole state with group packages of piano tuning services for Colorado mountain towns and communities. Benefits for those who may want to take advantage of this program are;

Goresko, also preaches the gospel of music. "We all tend to take music for granted. We hear it every day in the movies, on TV, during sports, at church and on the radio. We download it, purchase CD's, go to concerts or stream music and videos on a routine basis. Yet for all this access so many linger on the sidelines as spectators and consider the possibility of playing a musical instrument to be unattainable. This is a shame because music is and always has been a keystone to our humanity and one of the best ways to experience the joy and accomplishment of music is to play piano."
Aside from being a piano tuner, Goresko is an avid jazz pianist and a serial piano web developer who often writes about the purpose of music in education and how it can transform our lives. "It is important to remember that music has been around 35,000 years or more before the advent of modern civilization. So many things we now know and take for granted in our modern age came from our early ancestors need for making music. Indeed, much of our ability to think, reflect, conceptualize, concentrate and to memorize were all cognitive pieces they gained through music thousands and thousands of years before the advent of reading, writing and mathematics."
Goresko asserts that a large portion of people who are musically disengaged are only a few small steps away from playing the piano. For "Quick Start to Learning the Piano Tips" and more info about "Tuning the Rockies" download PDF and to reach Eben Goresko call (720) 270-2944 or email him.
