It is a great value and requires no additional planning for troop leaders - so it pretty much sells itself.

River Runners, a Colorado whitewater rafting company with locations in Buena Vista and Canon City, will again offer whitewater merit badge clinics to Boy Scouts from May 1 – August 21, 2011.

Whitewater merit badge clinics with River Runners are $100 for up to 10 Scouts, and $10 for each additional participant. When combined with a full-day intermediate-level Colorado whitewater rafting trip through Browns Canyon on the Arkansas River, each Scout will receive whitewater merit badge instruction and a six-hour rafting trip for under $100 per Scout, including lunch.

Eileen Peterson, general manager at River Runners, said that the Colorado whitewater rafting company has offered the clinic since 2006 and that it has been extremely popular with Boy Scout groups.

“We have already booked a lot of merit badge clinics for the 2011 season,” Peterson said. “It is a great value and requires no additional planning for troop leaders - so it pretty much sells itself.”

The whitewater merit badge clinic is held on the banks of the Arkansas River at River Runners Riverside Rafting Resort, just south of Buena Vista, Colo. The private clinic takes one to two hours depending on the size of the Boy Scout group, and covers whitewater paddling techniques, river signals, rescue protocol, and rapid classifications. Participants will swim in current, practice using a throw rope and navigate an inflatable kayak.

“Courses can be worked around the group’s schedule, but most prefer to take the clinic prior to a Browns Canyon whitewater rafting trip,” Peterson said. “These trips launch from our private beach, which makes it convenient for Boy Scout Groups – especially when they utilize our group camping facilities.”

According to Peterson, only three group campsites are available that range from $40- $50 per night and accommodate between 15-20 campers. Each site includes a fire pit, picnic tables and use of hot showers, bathrooms, sand volleyball court, and horseshoe pits.

“Group campsites are already filling up, so the sooner the better if you want to reserve dates,” Peterson said. “However, if our campsites are booked we can suggest several other camping options that are very close to our property.”

All River Runners merit badge counselors take the required Youth Protection E-learning courses through Boy Scouts of America and are registered with a Scout Service Center.
