In January of this year, Google announced an update to its search engine called “Search Plus Your World” which revolutionized how search engines work. Traditionally, when a user searched for a keyword term, Google would display website results which it felt most closely matched the user’s intent. With the update, Google will also display results that a user’s friends deem relevant, thereby making the search results personalized to each user.
Google will be pulling this personalized information from social networks. For instance, a user types in “Best Soap Detergent.” In addition to showing review sites, Google will also display what the user’s friends have posted about soap detergents, and display images, videos, and other content, which the user’s friends have shared.
“Most businesses agree that an important element of online marketing is getting your website to rank high in search engines,” said Hendry. “Businesses could accomplish this through traditional search engine optimization tactics, such as on-page optimization and link building. Because Google will now return search results according to what a user’s friends find important, businesses need to get people to share their content and engage with their business through social media.”
Brandtailers, Hendry’s marketing agency, recommends that businesses “strategically” integrate social media marketing into their Internet marketing plan to take full of advantage of the “Search Plus Your World” update. In addition to search engine optimization tactics businesses are already using, they should also adopt tactics to encourage social media sharing and engagement.
