John Besh is one of the best American chefs of his generation
Houston, TX (Vocus) October 9, 2009
Join Brazos Bookstore at Ouisie’s Table Restaurant (3939 San Felipe) for an evening with award-winning Louisiana Chef John Besh, signing his new cookbook, My New Orleans, on Monday, October 12, at 5:30 pm. Winner of the James Beard Award for Best Chef of the Southeast in 2006, Besh has set the benchmark for fine dining in New Orleans with four successful restaurants: Restaurant August, Besh Steak, Lüke, and La Provence. Houston’s own Ouisie’s Table will have several of his dishes available that night, and those who purchase the cookbook may enjoy a complimentary beverage.
Besh grew up in Southern Louisiana, learning at an early age the essentials of Louisiana’s rich culinary traditions. His appreciation for local ingredients and local cuisine has only increased since Hurricane Katrina, as he considers these essential to the survival of the people and cultural heritage of New Orleans. Showing the spirit of New Orleans in the wake of a disaster, Restaurant August was one of the first restaurants to reopen. Besh has been actively involved in efforts locally and national to raise funds for hurricane victims.
The book's sixteen chapters of culture, history, essay and insight tell the story of Besh’s New Orleans by the season and by the dish. Stunning location photography along with ingredient information make the Big Easy easy to tackle in home kitchens. Besh blends contemporary French techniques with indigenous Southern Louisiana products and know-how. His new offering is exclusively brought to fans and foodies everywhere by Andrews McMeel Publishing, and will be sold at Ouisie's on October 12 by Brazos Bookstore. From Mardi Gras, to the shrimp season, to the urban garden, to gumbo weather, boucherie (the season of the pig), and everything tasty in between, Besh gives a sampling of New Orleans that will have his fans craving for more.
“John Besh is one of the best American chefs of his generation,” says Paul Prudhomme, chef and owner of K-Paul's Louisiana Kitchen Magic Seasoning Blends. “His extensive knowledge of true Louisiana dishes and traditions adds tremendous credibility to his writing.” Jazz musician Wynton Marsalis says, “Maestro Besh lives the life he cooks; he doesn't just tell us how to prepare Louisiana favorites, he teaches us what these dishes mean, with an emphasis on how hospitality can enrich civilization.” A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to Cafe Reconcile, a New Orleans-based non-profit organization dedicated to providing at-risk youth an opportunity to learn life and interpersonal skills, and operational training for successful entry into the hospitality and restaurant industries.
