Newington, NH (Vocus) May 20, 2010
Planet Fitness donated $213,000 to breast cancer research, thanks to a special Mother’s Day promotion. For every new member that signed up at participating locations May 3 through May 10, a $10 donation was made to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation® (BCRF).
“The Mother’s Day promotion was an awesome way to give back to the community,” said Sharon Lomasney, a Planet Fitness franchisee. “So many lives have been touched and affected by breast cancer. Everyone was very receptive to this cause and I hope we commit to a pink shirt event at least once a year!”
A total of 118 clubs participated in nine markets nationwide: Biloxi, Miss., Boston, Mass., Las Vegas, Nev., New York, N.Y., Orlando, Fla., Providence, R.I., San Antonio, Texas, Maryland, and New Hampshire. More than 21,000 members signed up during the weeklong promotion for $10 down, $10 a month.
“The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is thrilled to accept this donation to help fund clinical and translational research worldwide,” said Myra Biblowit, BCRF President. “Partnering with Planet Fitness to promote the importance of exercise was a natural synergy and underscores BCRF’s mission of prevention and a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime. We are extremely grateful and look forward to working with Planet Fitness again.”
About The Breast Cancer Research Foundation®
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation® was founded in 1993 by Evelyn H. Lauder as an independent, not-for-profit organization dedicated to funding innovative clinical and translational research. In October 2009, BCRF awarded nearly $28.5 million to 173 scientists across the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and Australia. BCRF perseveres in directing more than 85 cents of every dollar raised directly to research. And for the eighth consecutive year, BCRF received Charity Navigator’s highest rating, four stars, thus outperforming over 99.8% of the 5,400 evaluated charities, while the American Institute of Philanthropy has awarded BCRF its highest possible rating of A+. BCRF is the only breast cancer organization in the U.S. to receive these accolades. For more information about BCRF, visit http://www.bcrfcure.org .
