Breast implants have greatly improved over the past several years and most women will have many years before there is a need to exchange implants.

Dr. Mark Deutsch, a plastic surgeon in Atlanta, has continued his participation in question and answer sessions on realself.com by providing answers to questions about breast implants. Most recently, he has answered questions about how long breast implants last, breast implants and pregnancy, and breast implant recovery time. Previously, Deutsch answered questions about placement, size and type of implants.
The first topic that Deutsch addressed was about how long breast implants last. He said that there are several factors that can affect how long they last, but that in general, breast implants should last 15 years. He said that breast implants can rupture prior to this time, but that “breast implants have greatly improved over the past several years and most women will have many years before there is a need to exchange implants.”
Deutsch also addressed the common concern that women have about breast implants and pregnancy, saying that “breast implants will not be harmed during pregnancy nor prevent you from breast feeding your infant if you choose to do so.” He did note that pregnancy and breast feeding can alter the appearance of breasts, however, and said that some women prefer to get a breast lift after pregnancy.
Additionally, he answered the common question, “how long is breast implant recovery time?” Deutsch said that some patients may be able to return to work within a few days of getting the procedure done. However, he noted that “there is no heavy lifting over 5-10 lbs for 4-6 weeks.”
