Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Knoxville, TN (PRWEB) October 24, 2012

Domestic Violence Awareness Month began in 1987 as an attempt by several organizations to tackle the problem of domestic violence. Brookhaven Retreat recognizes the devastating effects of violence through its trauma therapy programs, which aim to heal and empower women who have suffered trauma at the hands of others.

An estimated 24 percent of all women in the United States have been victims of domestic violence. Domestic violence’s far-reaching mental effect on women includes engendering a lasting sense of shame, fear and lowered self-esteem. Often, women suffering from the effects of violence turn to substance abuse or develop coexisting conditions. The trauma caused by domestic violence can lead to emotional and mental health conditions that may require the treatment of a residential facility for women.

Brookhaven Retreat’s all-women environment is particularly conducive to repairing these issues, as a women-only facility creates a sense of security that allows for easier sharing, understanding and healing.

It is possible to recover from the breakage resulting from trauma. Through self-care, emotional management, and the help of a fully licensed co-occurring diagnosis treatment center, the path to healing becomes clearer and easier to walk.

Brookhaven Retreat observes this month by celebrating women who have survived the devastation of trauma and continuing its work as an organization that helps women heal from the scars of domestic violence.

Recognizing the warning signs of domestic abuse and finding an appropriate residential treatment center may save somebody’s life. Brookhaven Retreat is proud to help change women’s lives by being part of the cycle of healing from domestic violence.
