In May, Brookhaven Retreat, a unique residential treatment facility exclusively for women with mental health and/or substance abuse issues, optimizes care and safety procedures with the help of Dr. Lynn Swisher.

On May 1-4, Dr. Lynn Swisher visited Brookhaven Retreat. A member of its professional consulting team and board certified by the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians, Dr. Swisher used the four-day visit to ensure Joint Commission Compliance and oversee performance improvement initiatives.

May’s staff and safety goals included an evaluation of the Joint Commission’s new Focused Standards Assessments as well as training for all staff on performance improvement procedures and compliance. The longer visit enabled Dr. Swisher to meet with weekend staff so that all staff could receive compliance training.

Dr. Swisher offered performance improvement training for newer staff members. Brookhaven Retreat’s performance improvement program identifies and evaluates areas in which it wants to improve care and services. Reviewing previous assignments and their outcomes allows Brookhaven Retreat to design new policies and procedures for continued excellence.

Brookhaven Retreat’s Medical Director, Dr. Julia Wood, met with Dr. Swisher to review the Joint Commission’s medical and leadership Focused Standards Assessments. This annual assessment identifies and reviews critical risk areas to undergo mandatory annual review as part of the Joint Commission’s accreditation program.

Because Brookhaven Retreat is in compliance will all standards, staff focuses on exceeding Joint Commission expectations. Dr. Wood and Dr. Swisher identified ways in which the medical team is working to exceed the standards required and promote optimal care.

Dr. Swisher also met with Brookhaven Retreat’s nursing team to establish an admissions training tool for new nurses. She also reviewed the Focused Standards Assessments for nursing and established cross-training procedures for the nursing team.

Brookhaven Retreat is continuously refining and improving its procedures in order to deliver the highest quality of care to women with mental health and substance abuse issues. When the safest possible environment is maintained, women are best able to recover from anxiety, depression, mood disorders and substance abuse. These monthly visits allow Brookhaven Retreat to evaluate all procedures so that its standards are not only maintained but exceeded with each subsequent review.
