Over a Quarter of a Million Contractors Set To Work over Bank Holiday Period

As the rest of the nation winds down to enjoy Easter and the Royal Wedding, up to a quarter of a million contractors and self-employed professionals could choose to work over the bank holiday period, according to a survey by Brookson Accountancy Services

The survey, commissioned by contractor accountant Brookson, was completed by more than 150 contractors and self-employed professionals working through either a Limited Company an umbrella company or as a sole trader to gain an understanding of how the bank holiday period and extra day off would impact them. A quarter of those surveyed said that they plan to work during the bank holidays in April and May.

According to the respondents, some have chosen to use the time to catch up on financial and administrative tasks and work that doesn’t require client contact.

Conversely, around 26 million employees will be off for the bank holidays, according to the Centre for Economic Business and Research.

Employed workers who work full-time are entitled to a minimum of 28 days off per year (including bank holidays). However, a fifth of contractors stated that they take just 0-10 days off.
Martin Hesketh, managing director of accountants for contractors Brookson, said:

“The survey results are not surprising, as many contractors feel that they can’t afford to take time off. From taking less annual leave to working on an eagerly anticipated extra day off (for employees), self-employed professionals generally benefit from a more flexible lifestyle, which sometimes means having to/choosing to work when employees are given time off.”
