Specialist contractor accountancy firm, Brookson, is a leading provider of accountancy, tax advice and support services to freelance contractors and individuals working in business for themselves.

The company has carried out research among its customer base to gain an insight into the trends and behaviour surrounding social media usage.

According to recent statistics from digital social media marketing agency, Clicky Media, the popularity of social media continues to rise rapidly in the UK, accounting for almost 11 per cent of the share of UK internet visits.

The same survey found social networking site, Facebook, has experienced continued growth in the UK with a reported 24 million active users. Accompanying Facebook to the top spot is equally popular microblogging site, Twitter, and professional social networking site, LinkedIn, which has now passed 70 million members.

LinkedIn has rapidly gained popularity among professionals looking to connect with contacts, colleagues and potential employers but are contractors and freelancers using this social media tool to its full potential?

Brookson, which represents more than 9,000 self-employed professionals working through an umbrella company, via a limited company or as a sole trader recently carried out research into its customer base to determine their views on social media.

Out of the customers asked, more than 64 per cent belong to a social networking site with the most popular being Facebook (52.5 per cent), followed by LinkedIn (32.1 per cent).

The survey among more than 300 contractors and freelancers also found nearly a quarter (24 per cent) of those asked had only been using social networking sites for less than six months. In contrast, only 18.7 per cent have been using a social networking website for two to three years and more than half (54.3 per cent) belong to one network.

Further findings found 77.6 per cent of people accessed social networking sites via their laptop or computer, with less than a quarter (20.9 per cent) using a mobile phone.

Commenting on the results from the survey, Sandra Rowley, marketing director at accountants for contractors Brookson, said:

“The figures relating to the number of our customers who use Facebook does not come as a surprise as it continues to be the most popular social networking site among internet users.

“It is interesting to see that just over 32 per cent of self-employed professionals, who completed the survey, use LinkedIn. This statistic is evidence of the value these contractors and freelancers place on using the networking website to generate business opportunities.

“Going forward it would be interesting to see if this figure increases as more and more contractors recognise LinkedIn as a valuable business tool.

“As recruiters, potential employers and like-minded colleagues continue to use this form of communication, it’s important someone working in business for themselves considers having a presence on networking sites – not only for employment opportunities but also to share knowledge with peers.

“It is, however, encouraging to see that our results found nearly a quarter of contractors had only been using social networking sites for less than six months, suggesting that individuals are beginning to recognise the value of having an online presence can have on their professional careers”
