BUILDER magazine hosted the 28th annual Builder's Choice Design and Planning Awards in Washington, DC on Thursday, October 16th. As the housing industry's oldest, largest and most prestigious design awards program, Builder's Choice recognizes the achievement of America's top residential builders and architects.

Each year a panel of noted and esteemed judges are chosen to select the Builder's Choice Design and Planning Awards winners and this year was no exception. The independent jury comprised six distinguished individuals, including J. Carson Looney, FAIA, Looney Ricks Kiss Architects, Memphis, TN; J. Christopher Stuhmer, Christopher Homes, Las Vegas, NV; Carmen Dominguez, Homes by Carmen Dominguez, L.C., Orlando, FL; Jacob S. Goldberg, Goldberg General Contracting, Inc., Chicago, IL; Kevin deFreitas, Kevin deFreitas Architects, A.I.A., San Diego, CA; and Tim Busse, Whittaker Homes, St. Charles, MO. In all, they bestowed 7 Special Focus awards, 24 Merit awards, 22 Grand awards, and one Project of the Year.

This year's Home of the Year distinction was awarded to South River Residence, a custom home offering a contemporary twist on the historic architecture of the Chesapeake Bay tidewater region. Located in Annapolis, Md., the project was designed by Wayne Good of Good Architecture of Annapolis, and built by Winchester Construction of Crownsville, Maryland.

Judges evaluated entries based on overall excellence and innovation in architecture, technology and land planning. Other criteria used were: creative use of materials; interior design; floor plan efficiency; new design explorations; timeless details freshened for today; site sensitivity, budget, and contributions to environmental sustainability.

"By showcasing the work of top builders and architects, the Builder's Choice Awards inspire housing professionals around the nation to raise the bar," said BUILDER Editorial Director Boyce Thompson, noting that eco-stewardship, affordability, and regionalism were prominent themes in this year's competition. "At a time when the housing industry is hurting, these projects showed innovation and pragmatism."

Three industry leaders also were inducted into the fourth annual BUILDER - Wm. S. Marvin Hall of Fame for Design Excellence in recognition of their contributions to residential design.

2008 Hall of Fame inductees are:

  • David Baker, David Baker + Partners, San Francisco, CA
  • Alan Green, The Green Company, Newton Centre, MA
  • Stephen Muse, Muse Architects, Bethesda, MD
