Child safety is of extreme importance when it comes to selecting the right bunk beds for your kids.

Factory Bunk Beds comments on the consumer safety report from Queensland’s Dr. Kirsten McKenzie. The report, which can be seen by clicking here, calls into question the safety of child products such as bunk beds and baby changing tables, among other items.

The report was prepared by QUT’s (Queensland University of Technology) Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety, most notably Dr. Kirsten McKenzie, the lead author of the report. The report’s purpose was to highlight the dangers of common consumer products in regards to children and how to improve their safety.

The report specifically points out bunk beds as being one of the dangerous home-products that children can get injured using. Dr. McKenzie notes “What is concerning is that the bulk of bunk bed injuries are occurring to children well below the recommended age for use of bunk beds and that most of the injuries are a result of children playing on the bunks rather than sleeping. So while the design standards may be contributing to a reduction in injuries, the behavior around the use of the bunk beds needs to be addressed."

In response to these findings, Factory Bunk Beds adds, “Although we don’t sell our products in Queensland, Australia, we couldn’t agree more that it is the parents responsibility to ensure that the children are as safe as possible around their bunk beds,” said Chris Granwehr, Brand Voice Manager for Factory Bunk Beds. “Our products exceed American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) standards for safety, but that alone is not enough to prevent injuries.”

“The parents need to ensure that the children are taught how to use the bunk bed properly and to clarify what is safe vs. what is not safe with the bunk bed. Once the children understand the purpose of the bunk bed and know what not to do, bunk-bed related injuries will go down significantly,” concludes Granwehr.

Factory Bunk Beds’ products are designed and built with child safety in mind, as they tend to use the majority of the bunk beds sold from our website. To learn more about the safety of our bunk beds or to visit the website, go to http://www.factorybunkbeds.com.
