Business owners world-wide are finding that the best advice to sustain and expand their businesses often comes from their peers -- other business owners who have experienced similar challenges and opportunities and developed real-world strategies to address them.
One of the leading organizations that offers these business owner roundtables and peer advisory boards is The Alternative Board® (TAB), an organization founded in 1990 that brings business owners together to address common challenges and find solutions uniquely suited to today’s new economic reality. Membership in TAB is by invitation only and is limited to small and medium-sized businesses that are privately held with revenue ranging from $1M to $100M.
These real-world advisory boards are often referred to as “think tanks” by TAB members, who benefit from the candid advice from others who have “been there and done that.”
The Alternative Board recently opened in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, serving the surrounding cities of Mechanicsburg and Hershey. TAB Capital Region PA launched under the direction of Roger Lekberg, of Mechanicsburg, PA, a 30-year business-building veteran.
“I saw a tremendous amount of opportunity in the region to share valuable tools and resources with the locally owned businesses,” says Lekberg. “The Capital Region’s business community is evolving and we’re looking for a way to connect businesses with each other to provide new strategies and paths to generate growth.”
Last year, across its international membership base, TAB reported that nearly two-thirds of its members either experienced growth or remained the same size -- despite the unprecedented economic conditions that battered many businesses worldwide.
TAB is currently building business advisory/peer boards in Harrisburg, Mechanicsburg, Hershey, Camp Hill and surrounding areas. Each board is comprised of up to 10 business owners, CEOs and presidents from non-competing businesses who meet monthly to learn from one another and find solutions to business challenges.
“TAB isn’t just about solving issues. A critical aspect of what our peer boards do is help business owners develop new and innovative strategies to capture opportunities. We work as a team to generate sales growth plans, marketing strategies, and strategically manage our businesses for maximum productivity and profitability,” says Lekberg.
The support doesn’t just stop with the peer boards. Membership in TAB also offers business owners monthly one-on-one coaching sessions, led by Lekberg. Coaching sessions are intended to ensure business owners can act on the advice and counsel they receive from their peers in board meetings.
