...each person in the family business is either a family member, an owner, or a manager in the business. Sometimes the circles overlap. It’s helpful to recognize which circle you are in or should be in when making a decision.

On Thursday December 15th, two of Chick-fil-A®’s third-generation family members, James Cathy and Brent Fielder, joined Family Business Radio host Meredith Moore in-studio to discuss the dynamics of one of Atlanta’s most prominent family-owned businesses. James and Brent talked about Chick-fil-A®’s beginnings, its corporate mission, and the efforts of the second and third generation family members to balance family membership and business involvement.

James who is the grandson of Chick-fil-A founder S. Truett Cathy and Brent who married Truett Cathy’s granddaughter both work in the family business. James works at the Chick-fil-A® corporation, famous for its boneless breast of chicken sandwich, its early establishment of restaurants in shopping malls, and its popular cows of the ‘Eat Mor Chickin’ ad campaigns. Brent works at Winshape, a Chick-fil-A® foundation that started as a summer camp and scholarship program and now includes seven different ministries and reaches more than 32 countries.

During the interview with Meredith, the two men shared their experiences and observations of life in a family-owned business that is now seeing its 3rd generation of family members enter into the corporate structure. They talked about the company’s history, its future, and their plans to be a part of its continuing growth.

Brent noted that each person in the family business is either a family member, an owner, or a manager in the business and said, “Sometimes the circles overlap. It’s helpful to recognize which circle you are in or should be in when making a decision”.
