Today, BuildZoom announced that the California remodeling and construction industry rebounded in Q3 after a difficult Q2 that saw the lowest level of industry activity since 2007, according to analysis of state licensure data. In Q3, activity increased approximately 9% quarter-over-quarter.
“There were positive indicators that California’s remodeling and construction industry trended upwards in Q3,” said Rabih Helou, a spokesman for the company. “After a difficult Q2, licensure activity picked up at a significant pace in Q3 and neared the levels we were seeing in Q3 of 2010 after accounting for seasonality.”
Several notable California contractors validated this trend. According to Bobby Miller, owner of the LA-based company Dumpstars Dumpsters, “We’ve seen a marked increase in business activity over the past three months. Most of our customers tend to be cautiously optimistic about the outlook moving forward.”
Other California contractors, while seeing gains earlier in the quarter, observed more volatility towards the end of the quarter. Ali Bemanian, president of Pacific Play Systems, headquartered in San Diego explains, ”We noticed a sharp upswing in the number of inquiries in July however activity cooled off in August as many of our customers became increasingly concerned with the economy. In the past several weeks, we have seen activity begin to pick-up again however the state of the economy is clearly on the minds of many of our customers.”
Helou adds, "These observations were made when viewing the quarter as a whole. The jury is still out on whether this was a temporary shift, driven primarily by increased consumer confidence towards the early part of the quarter."
In order to better understand the macro-level activity within the remodeling and construction industry, BuildZoom analyzed licensure data across a variety of industry-specific categories in the state of California. The data was then normalized across industry trade classifications and analyzed according to both absolute and deseasonalized values.
