The BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico has garnered increasing interest in renewable energy, specifically solar energy, according to David Donnelly, General Manager of Applied Solar Energy Solutions, a California solar company located in Fullerton.

Applied Solar Energy Solutions, a division of Murdon Corporation, designs and installs solar power systems for Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Los Angeles solar customers. According to David Donnelly, calls from residential and commercial property owners inquiring about converting to solar energy have increased by upwards of 30% since the spill that occurred on April 20, 2010.

As the oil slick continues to expand at an alarming rate after many failed attempts to contain the leak, politicians and the general public are looking for ways to ensure such catastrophic environmental damage never happens again. Many are looking to solar energy as the answer. Instead of continuing to reinforce American oil dependence by supplementing energy needs with dangerous, polluting oil, people can and should turn to abundant solar energy alternatives. The sun produces enough energy on the Earth every 4 minutes to make enough electricity to meet the needs of the current world population. Solar energy does not destroy coastlines or marine wildlife because it is safe and clean. It is time for solar energy to play a more prominent role as an energy resource and move to the forefront in the movement to utilize safer energy sources.

In addition to significant electricity cost savings, Applied Solar Energy Solution’s clients rank the importance of helping the environment high on their reasons for going solar. Besides saving a client over a hundred thousand dollars in electrical costs over the life of the system, a typical home solar power system will save the environment 278,000 lbs of Co2, the leading greenhouse gas, 900 lbs of NoX which creates smog, 810 lbs of So2 which causes acid rain, 60 lbs of particulates that cause asthma and the equivalent of 450,000 miles driven in an average car. Installing a home solar power system is equivalent to taking 1.5 cars off the road for 25 years or planting 2.4 acres of trees.

Solar energy systems installed by Applied Solar Energy Solutions are quick to install and now are more affordable than ever with state and federal incentives paying up to 50% of the cost. The staff at Applied Solar Energy Solutions are experts in working through the rebate red tape. The staff will manage the rebate process for customers and make sure customers get all the incentives available to them. All Applied Solar Energy Solutions modules come with a 25 year warranty and a 10 year warranty on the inverter and installation. According to David Donnelly, over the past year, module prices have come down considerably and while prices seem to have stabilized, they remain at an all time low. Per David Donnelly, “Combining today’s rebates and tax credits with local incentives and an all time low in panel prices, there has never been a better time to go solar!”
