The California Yacht Club will again host the much anticipated 2012 Sunset Sailing Series, the largest racing Regatta of Sail Boats on the Santa Monica Bay.

This annual event, which originated in 1964, begins April 11th and runs every Wednesday through September 5th, with the exception of July 4th this year. Each Regatta consists of 21 scheduled races among 8 various boat classes, with each racing class starting in five minute intervals.

“The Sunset Series is one of the best Regatta’s in California, and easily one of the most popular sailing events that we host all year. We anticipate upwards of 75 or more participants each week among the various boat classes.” said Garrett Ozar, California Yacht Club’s Director of Marketing. “Our members look forward to the Sunset Series every year because it offers a spirited competition, and amazing camaraderie set against one of the most amazing backdrops you’ll ever find – sunset on the Santa Monica Bay.”

On April 4th, one week prior to the Sunset Sailing Series kickoff, a free, informative racing seminar will be held at the California Yacht Club at 7pm with presentations on racing rules, the racing course, starting signals and navigation. The seminar is open to all who wish to participate.

Equally as popular as the Regatta itself, are the post-racing festivities at California Yacht Club. Each Wednesday evening during the Sunset Sailing Series, the members of the California Yacht Club host a reception where race participants gather after the race to review results and enjoy a variety of food, cocktails, and entertainment.

Situated in Marina del Rey, California, the world’s largest man-made small craft harbor, California Yacht Club is one of the oldest and most prestigious yacht clubs in the world. Founded in 1922, California Yacht Club has since left an indelible mark on the yachting world. Members of the California Yacht Club have sailed in every major Regatta in the world as well as earned Olympic medals and garnered top honors in national and international sailing competitions.
