Making informed decisions is the cornerstone to long-term financial security, but many young people can’t seem to make that connection. The high local dropout rate may be one reason that the Greater Springfield community leads the Commonwealth in foreclosures. “Rise,” a production of Project 13, an innovative Western Massachusetts dropout prevention program, serves to educate kids that education is a requirement for financial success. The program debuts Friday, February 04, 2011 at 7PM on CBS 3 Springfield, and offers engaging segments that let students know about the pitfalls of cutting short their education.

“Learning equals earning, especially in our knowledge-based economy,” notes Thomas Fox, Community Outreach Director at Cambridge Credit Counseling . “This is a fantastic opportunity to educate young people about the relationship between education and finance.”

Mr. Fox appears in a Rise segment that illustrates the importance of building savings at an early age, and how those funds can grow throughout one’s lifetime. Future shows will include similar subject matter related to building wealth and making smart financial decisions.

“Cambridge Credit Counseling is proud to support Project 13, as well as other initiatives such as Junior Achievement, “ said Fox. “Literacy, financial or otherwise, is an important component of an individual’s wellbeing, and we are proud to contribute to programs that empower children.”

Project 13 is a dropout prevention program that begins when students who are identified as at-risk for drop-out turn 13. The program makes a 6-year commitment to the students, and has goals of a 100% graduation rate and a 100% pass rate on the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System exam. Project 13 provides external case management services to students in order to ease the tension between school and home, and to facilitate a connection to existing community programs, providing much needed access to vocational, recreational, economic and academic support.
