At the start of the summer season 2011, Camp Chateaugay began using its newly purchased property, which lies adjacent to the existing campus. Camp now has an additional 120 acres of land to utilize for program expansion and development.
What does this mean for Camp Chateaugay? This means that there are now miles and miles of mountain biking and horseback riding trails. The trails were traversed this past summer and the campers delighted in the new scenic terrain available to them. A beautiful new barn was acquired along with the four new pastures and a cross country jumping course. The jump field is used for the more advanced riders. It is also a great place to bring novice riders who can watch and learn from the more advanced ones and in turn, may be inspired to work toward the future goal of using the field.
The property will also bring our soccer program to a higher level of athletics by giving campers who are interested in the sport a beautiful new soccer field to learn and play on. The construction of the new field is just beginning and should be ready for use by summer 2014. And for those that are inclined to outdoor living and camp craft; campers have already enjoyed picking berries in the berry fields, have used the trails for plant and tree identification walks and the future at Chateaugay will bring new Wilderness camping sights. These sights will be especially useful for the younger campers; who may be experiencing Wilderness overnights for the first time and will feel safer knowing that they are still close to the main campus. It will also be substantial in building cabin community; as entire cabins will be able to venture into the Wilderness together, thrilling at s’mores and traditional song by the light of the campfire.
