Burlingame, CA (PRWEB) June 27, 2012

Strides for Life Colon Cancer Foundation--a non-profit organization in the Bay Area that was founded in 2004 in memory of Dylan Cappel, whose life was taken by colon cancer at the age of 23--is once again preparing for its ninth annual “Get Your Rear in Gear" 4-mile walk/run/wheel on Oct. 21 at Lake Merced in San Francisco.

“Our annual cancer walk promotes the mission and purpose of Strides for Life Colon Cancer Foundation of saving lives through prevention and early detection of colon cancer, which is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. according to the Colon Cancer Coalition,” Katie Christie, executive director of Strides for Life Colon Cancer Foundation, said.

Raising awareness is an especially important goal for this disease considering that 90 percent of colon cancer deaths could have been prevented. For more information about colon cancer facts and who is at risk, visit http://coloncancercoalition.com/education/what-you-need-to-know/.

Supporters of the event may participate in honor of survivors and loved ones lost to colon cancer, and 100 percent of the event’s proceeds will go toward the Strides for Life Colon Cancer Foundation program, which provides the uninsured and underinsured with free screenings for colon cancer. Bay Area colon cancer donations can also be made during the run.

To date Strides for Life has provided nearly $1 million for colon cancer screening to uninsured and underinsured individuals.

The ninth annual Strides for Life Colon Cancer Foundation “Get Your Rear in Gear" 4-mile walk/run/wheel will be held at Lake Merced in San Francisco on Oct. 21. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m., the opening ceremony at 8:45 a.m. and the race will begin at 9:00 a.m.
