Not only have software sales largely remained unaffected, but vendor website traffic and sales leads, both of which are leading demand indicators, have also been strong

Capterra , a website that connects buyers and sellers of business software, has conducted a survey of its software vendors to determine the impact of the country's current financial turmoil on software buying patterns. Capterra looked at three factors: actual software sales, sales leads and website traffic.
More than 50 leading software vendors responded and the results are extremely positive.
- 79% say their sales have stayed about the same or increased noticeably in the last few weeks.
- 75% say their sales leads have stayed about the same or increased noticeably in the last few weeks.
- 82% of respondents say their web traffic has stayed about the same during the past few weeks. While 9% report a decline, another 9% reported an increase.
"Not only have software sales largely remained unaffected, but vendor website traffic and sales leads, both of which are leading demand indicators, have also been strong," remarked Capterra President Michael Ortner. "This supports what we have witnessed with web traffic to Capterra. More businesses are using Capterra to find software now than this time last year, and we also witnessed an increase in users from August to September. Some of this increase is due to our own marketing efforts, but even when we account for that, we still see a bump in activity. Of course, it is impossible to predict how this will play out over the next year, but our internal software demand indicators remain strong."
These findings are in line with what top industry analysts have stated. Both Gartner Inc. and Forrester Research Inc. announced this month that the technology industry is faring better than the overall economy. While many IT departments have made budget cuts, Forrester Research specifically points to the software products industry as a strong area within the tech sector.
"Hopefully this is a sign that businesses recognize investments in software as a key factor in improving productivity as opposed to just being another expense," said Ortner.
