Albuquerque personal injury lawyer Whitney Buchanan—providing personal injury legal representation to victims of injuries from car accidents, truck accidents and motor cycle accidents—comments on a recent study showing the dramatically high rates of New Mexico injury-related deaths.

"Serious car accidents happen every day in New Mexico in cities such as Albuquerque, Santa Fe, or Rio Rancho,” said Buchanan.

Albuquerque personal injury attorney Whitney Buchanan reports that a new study by the Trust For America’s Health, in partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, reveals that New Mexico had the most injury-related fatalities for Americans.

According to the study, 97.8 per 100,000 people suffered injury deaths, nearly double the national rate of 57.9 per 100,000.

Researchers investigated whether or not states met criteria for 10 laws and regulations that can help prevent common injuries, including car accident injuries that could be prevented by legislation on seat belts, drunk driving penalties and motorcycle helmets.

New Mexico scored seven out of 10 on key indicators of steps states can take to prevent injuries, while nationally 24 states scored a five or lower.Albuquerque car accident lawyer Whitney Buchanan said New Mexico legislators should do all they can to change these disturbing statistics, particularly in terms of New Mexico car accident fatalities.

“Serious car accidents happen every day in New Mexico in cities such as Albuquerque, Santa Fe, or Rio Rancho,” said Buchanan. “Despite public awareness of the car crash dangers such as drunk driving, driving while intoxicated (DWI) accidents continue to be a significant problem on New Mexico’s roadways.”

Amber Williams, Executive Director of the Safe States Alliance, echoed the need for new motor vehicle safety laws in the TFAH press release. "Seat belts, helmets, drunk driving laws and a range of other strong prevention policies and initiatives are reducing injury rates around the country," she said.

The report found that seat belts alone saved approximately 69,000 lives between 2006 and 2010, and motorcycle helmets spared an estimated 8,000 lives from 2005 to 2009.
