Our top three vehicles prove that customers can go further with their dollar, without sacrificing the versatility of an SUV.

Car-Specials.com is an online automotive marketplace that connects customers with the best lease deals and finance specials at local dealerships, while providing tools to make online car shopping more exciting and informative. To help with this process of finding the perfect vehicle, the editors at Car-Specials.com have named their top three Best SUVs for Fuel Efficiency.
Using this year’s statistics from the U.S. Department of Energy, the staff at Car-Specials.com analyzed highway gas mileage, EPA-estimated annual fuel costs, and base MSRP to select their top-rated vehicles. The following are the top three SUVs, listed in order:
1. 2013 Mazda CX-5 – The CX-5 crossover offers both the lowest annual fuel cost ($1,850) and the lowest base price ($21,195) of any SUV, which earned it the number one spot. Appropriately, Mazda was honored by KBB.com as the Lowest Cost to Own Brand for 2013.
2. 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek – Subaru’s versatile, all-wheel drive XV Crosstrek’s 33 mpg highway tops the CX-5’s highway mileage of 32, but it comes in just behind the CX-5 with an annual fuel cost of $1,950 and an MSRP of $21,995. It was named an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick for 2013.
3. 2013 Buick Encore – The all-new Encore achieves identical efficiency statistics to the second-place XV Crosstrek, but its “luxury crossover” status adds a few more standard features, resulting in a higher price tag and a third-place finish.
Each of these vehicles has an annual fuel cost of less than $2,000, highway mpg of at least 32, and a starting MSRP of less than $25,000.
“A decade ago, SUVs were known as the biggest gas-guzzlers on the road,” said Roger Laurendeau, president of Car-Specials.com. “But in recent years, manufacturers have made an effort to trim extra weight from their vehicles and develop new fuel-saving technologies to help cut fuel costs. Our top three vehicles prove that customers can go further with their dollar, without sacrificing the versatility of an SUV.”
The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport (31 highway mpg) offers competitive fuel efficiency and value, but fell just short of the top three. The Toyota Highlander Hybrid and Lexus RX 450h offer mileage and fuel savings that earned consideration, but their higher base prices ($40,170 and $46,310, respectively) left them on the outside looking in.
Also worth mention is Toyota’s RAV4 EV, which dominates all competition in both mileage and fuel cost. It averages a purely electric equivalent of 74 mpg highway, with a fuel cost of just $800 per year. However, it is only available in California, and therefore does not reach a wide enough audience to justify inclusion in the top three.
