The biggest increase we've seen is people calling us and thanking us for helping them avoid a Craigslist used car ripoff.

CarHistory.us.org has seen a surge in people being concerned about ripoff artists in the used car industry, the company said yesterday.
“One of the ways we can keep track of goings on in the used car marketplace is by having our customer service representatives listen to our customers when they call us,” a company spokesman said. “What we've seen over the past few months is an increase in people saying they were almost a ripoff victim.”
The company sells reports that let people know the real value of a car and who really owns it, among other publicly available information.
“The biggest increase we've seen is people calling us and thanking us for helping them avoid a Craigslist used car ripoff,” the spokesman said. “These kinds of ripoffs seem to be happening more and more often these days.”
In a Craigslist ripoff, company officials said, people place ads for cars they don't own on the site, and then get people to send them money via Western Union to buy the cars. Once they send the money, the car never arrives.
“It seems like the new technology makes it easier than ever before for ripoff artists to ply their trade,” he said. “Thankfully we've been able to help a lot of people avoid this type of ripoff, but we worry about how many other people are getting ripped off out there. We are trying to spread the word.”
If anyone has become a victim of this type or ripoff, they should contact their local authorities, he said.
