The Writing is on the Wall
Last October Amazon sold more digital books than hardcover and softcover books combined. And that was before the “iPad and Kindle Christmas of 2010.” Publishers who believed they could ignore digital publishing for “a few more years” realize that is no longer possible.

The Good News
Most paper-oriented publishers are invested in traditional publishing. Their full warehouses, dwindling revenues and shrinking margins are linked directly to the exploding digital publishing revolution. Does that mean that publishers need to shut down their paper publishing operations?

In April of 2011 Cathedral Rock Publishing published the 1st “Book IS the Store” application, a MultiMedia eBook that contained its own music soundtrack: Cathedral of the Senses. Just like a movie, where song excerpts are played during appropriate moments of a scene, this novel does the same thing. But with Cathedral of the Senses, if the reader likes the song excerpt, he can click out directly from the eBook and purchase the entire song (or soundtrack). After the purchase, the eBook reopens to the exact place the reader left off.

A week later Cathedral Rock Publishing released another first, John David Balla’s "The Big Bite and the Shocking Truth About Original Sin," a MultiMedia eBook that contains Balla’s music video, “In Heaven (there ain’t no),” which plays directly inside the chapter of the same name.

The video can be expanded to full screen mode for a richer viewing experience. Though not a “Book Is the Store” application per se -- Balla decided to include the entire video (not just an excerpt) within the book, providing additional value to the customer, while still undercutting the price of most “pure vanilla” eBooks. Cathedral Rock sees this tried and true “more for less” marketing tactic also gaining momentum in the MultiMedia eBook space.
