Newest membership figures from dating site IllicitEncounters.com show how recent affairs of the rich and famous have made 'extramarital sex' the UK's favourite recreational activity.

The website has created a graph to illustrate how celebrity affairs have affected their membership

So many male role models have hit the headlines this year, after being caught red-handed. The media has a colossal affect on the public consciousness. Although the affairs of the rich and famous may seem insignificant, they increase the acceptability of affairs in society. At the same time, those aspirers among us may see having a lover as a high-class accessory, like a sexy sports car.

A slew of celebrity affairs, and changing attitudes to adultery, have made 2010 The Year of the Affair. IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s largest dating site for married people, has experienced its busiest yet, with a membership fast approaching 500,000 members across the UK.

The website’s rate of growth has increased by 55% year on year, and 92,000 new members have passed through its virtual doors since December 2009.

IllicitEncounters.com, which has been running since 2003, attributes its recent success to the dalliances of Tiger Woods, Ashley Cole, and other high-profile celebrities, who have normalised the idea of extramarital relations.

In fact, the site has seen such a correlation between the exploits of the rich and famous, and its fluctuating membership growth, that they have produced the following graph to illustrate the trend.

Although many recent public scandals have revolved around celebrity men, the site has reported an unexpected increase in women using the website to find discreet partnership.

“Women seem more comfortable with the idea of having an extramarital relationship as an ‘add on’ to their marriage", says Rosie Freeman-Jones, representative from the site. "The woman of the 21st century is vastly different to her 20th century counterpart; no longer are women expected to ‘put up and shut up’ with bad sex in their marriage. Now, more than ever, unsatisfied women are being proactive about finding fulfilment elsewhere. Sites like Illicit Encounters make finding a discreet affair partner so much easier ”

Men, however, are inspired by famous stars playing away, comments CEO of the site, Adam Scott. “So many male role models have hit the headlines this year, after being caught red-handed. The media has a colossal affect on the public consciousness. Although the affairs of the rich and famous may seem insignificant, they increase the acceptability of affairs in society. At the same time, those aspirers among us may see having a lover as a high-class accessory, like a sexy sports car.”

To tie in with this year’s World Cup, the site has offered to extend the membership of its paying members until England are kicked out of the championship, providing up to a month’s free access to the site. 36% of the site’s membership say they are football fans, but the predominant sport of IE members is rugby, with 42% declaring a love for the sport within their profiles.
