According to the Federal Communications Commission, Hurricane Sandy’s recent storm took out 25% of cell towers across 10 states and 158 counties. While only a small number of emergency calls have failed, as indicated by the FCC, this outage has disrupted 911 service, forcing calls to be rerouted. According to the FCC Chairman, Julius Genachowski, “communication outages could get worse before they get better, particularly for mobile networks.”
In times of emergency, wireless consumers are heavily reliant on sustainable mobile networks and the service they provide. Genechowski is urging cell phone consumers to use other means of communication such as social media and emailing or texting rather than utilizing voice calls to relieve the strain of the networks. By doing this, it will keep the networks less congested for priority calls, according to the Wall Street Journal.
